Punjab Government’s ‘Green Lockdown’ Aims to Reduce Lahore’s Smog

Punjab Government’s Initiative:

Punjab has taken a ‘green lockdown’ to address the alarming rise in smog over Lahore. This
initiative will focus on the worst-polluted areas and aims to improve air quality in one of the
world’s most polluted cities. The authorities issued a notification listing the restrictions that
will be imposed in designated hotspots.
The lockdown will see construction activities halt on specific streets, including Davis Road,
Aigertron Road, and Durand Road. During this period, even auto-rickshaws will not be
available. Commercial generators cannot be used, and outdoor grilling will be prohibited after
8 PM to further reduce pollution.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz underscored this issue as a matter of grave
importance. She intends to reach out to the Chief Minister of Indian Punjab to tackle the issue
together. “This is not a political issue, but a human issue,” she emphasized, calling for joint
efforts.
In response to critical air quality levels, Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad
Khan announced a special session. He declared that the Lahore air pollution crisis can no
longer be ignored. The assembly will discuss effective measures to combat this serious issue.
Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb announced that four industrial units will be
demolished for failing to comply with emission control standards. The Punjab Environment
Protection Department inspected 941 vehicles, imposing fines of Rs 503,000 for smoke
emissions. As a result, 72 vehicles were impounded.

Key Measures Taken:

The air quality index has shot up to alarming levels, peaking at 520. As a precautionary
measure for public health safety, authorities have made face masks mandatory for residents.
CM Maryam Nawaz has directed relevant departments to enforce environmental regulations
strictly.
To further combat pollution, authorities have grounded approximately 2,500 vehicles with
faulty engines and sealed 469 factories. Police have arrested individuals for burning crop
residue, leading to 318 FIRs and multiple arrests. These measures aim to protect public health
while improving air quality in Lahore.
The green lockdown represents proactive action against a critical environmental challenge.
As events progress, the Punjab government remains committed to implementing effective
solutions. Residents hope for cleaner air throughout Lahore.
